It is that time of year when we put up Christmas trees, decorate homes with displays of lights and garland, and bake holiday treats that fill the home with a wonderful aroma. However, it is also the time of year when the number of home fires increases. The Union Fire Protection District would like to prevent the increase of home fires by informing it’s residences of the community with a list of safety concerns.
When choosing a real tree the needles should not fall off the tree when tapped on the ground.
Always cut one inch off the bottom of a real tree so the tree can absorb water.
The tree stand of a real tree should hold a least a gallon of water. A six foot tree will use about a gallon of water every two days. The water level should be checked every day.
Keep trees away from floor heaters, fireplaces, or other heat sources.
Use only UL approved lights for decoration and follow manufacturers instructions as to the number of light strands that can be linked together.
